Driving Safely With Parkinson's

The building of a world-first tool designed to keep people with Parkinson's driving safely for longer is complete, having been installed onto the Young Onset Parkinson's Exchange (YOP-X) app developed by Parkinson's Australia.

Written by people with Parkinson's, a total of 131 contributors from across Australia have shared their thoughts on what is keeping them on the road, or what may have assisted them to keep driving for longer.

“Driving is a very difficult topic of conversation with family and medical people. It is very personal and very emotional, because it is so bound up with being independent as well as helpful.”

“People with Parkinson’s who are safe to drive and feel confident driving should absolutely be supported to keep driving if they wish, and we need to be aware and open to the idea of giving up when the time is right.”

“You need to be well aware of your body, your interaction with your medication, and the importance of being tuned in to your body and its response to medication.”

The new tool includes helpful tips and strategies around topics such as:

  • Choosing the Right Car

  • Driving Technology

  • Confidence and Ability

  • Identifying Limitations

  • Driving Conditions

  • Maintaining Concentration

  • Hand Eye Coordination

  • Licensing Provisions

  • On and Off Times

  • Talking to Your Specialist

You can download the free Young Onset Parkinson's Exchange (YOP-X) app through your Apple Store or Google Play.
